Exodus 3:1-4 NKJV

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. [2] And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. [3] Then Moses said, "I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn." [4] So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am."

Moses, the fugitive, had run away from Egypt and had made a new life for himself as a shepherd, tending his father-in-laws flocks in Midian.

He was far from his own people, having failed to help them in their slavery, only succeeding in killing an Egyptian for ill treating his kinsman.

He had tried in his own way to be a saviour for no avail.

Now he's faraway from any one or anything - in the desert facing the mountain of God.

It's a strange place for the call of the Lord to happen.

Yet there, in that barren environment, without distractions, the Lord is able to attract Moses' attention.

Bushes are rare in a desert, but a bush on fire that doesn't consume, now that's even rarer.

From that unique fiery phenomena, God chooses to call Moses to Him by name.

You and I may need to be taken to a desert time in order to hear the Voice of the Lord calling out to each one, individually, personally.

When we're in a lonely, solitary and barren place, perhaps this is the only environment in which God can truly attract our attention - calling out your name, my name - a personal encounter.

I pray that anyone reading this, who feels abandoned and alone, will see and hear something singular, your own divine wooing towards the Saviour, Jesus Christ, whose Voice has been ignored up 'til now.

May the Word of God burn in your heart and draw you from deep within your spirit to the Holy Ground of the Cross where you can remove those sinful "shoes" and be called close to the living Lord Jesus.

Exodus 3:5 NKJV

Then He said, "Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground."

That was the old way - but now we're called close:

Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV

Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
