My left ear has become blocked over the past couple of days. For those who have suffered with impacted ear wax you will identify with the frustration.

Suddenly the outside noise becomes muffled, but the internal sounds of chewing and swallowing is magnified.

I must admit this renewed experience has helped me empathise with my nearest and dearest, who has hearing impairment.

Anyway I've been softening the hard wax with oil and soda mix and then washing out with warm water - it's amazing to regain the freedom of hearing.

My spiritual ears too can become blocked as I neglect prayer and the Word.

The result is I only hear my selfish internal desires.

The impacted hard wax of my sinful self blocks out Jesus' Truth so that I don't have ears to hear any more.

Then I need to soften up those spiritual ears with the help of the oil of the Holy Spirit.

God is always speaking, but am I willing to unblock my ears to listen and really hear?

In the same way that I had to take action to remove the physical blockage, so I must take radical spiritual steps to unblock my spiritual ears.

Am I frustrated enough with the state of my spiritual life to get unblocked?

Is Jesus asking me if I have ears to hear what He's saying?

Joshua 3:9 NKJV

So Joshua said to the children of Israel, "Come here, and hear the Words of the LORD your God."

"My eyes are dry, my faith is old

My heart is hard, my prayers are cold

But I know how I ought to be

Alive to You and dead to me

O what can be done for an old heart like mine

Soften it up with oil and wine

The oil is You, Your Spirit of love

Wash me a new in the wine of Your blood"
