Luke 23:26-31 NKJV
Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus. [27] And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. [28] But Jesus, turning to them, said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. [29] For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!' [30] Then they will begin 'to say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"' [31] For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?"
The passage from Revelation which predicted humanity's response to God's Wrath: "mountains fall on us" was first spoken of by Jesus on the way to the Cross.
As Simon carried His Cross, Jesus could see ahead to the time of the end, and was more concerned for us than for Himself.

The motivation to save us was driven by His vision of the coming "Day of the Lord". His deepest longing was to provide us an escape from the wrath to come.
He saw the gathering storm of humanity's total rebellion against the Creator and provided in His own Body and Blood a bridge of reconciliation for those who believe in Him.
Believers in Jesus will be saved, taken out before that great and terrible Day of the Lord.
Joel 2:10-13 NKJV
The earth quakes before them, The heavens tremble; The sun and moon grow dark, And the stars diminish their brightness. [11] The LORD gives voice before His army, For His camp is very great; For strong is the One who executes His word. For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; Who can endure it? [12] "Now, therefore," says the LORD, "Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning." [13] So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.
Turn to Jesus while there's still time.
