John 2:23-25 AMPC

But when He was in Jerusalem during the Passover Feast, many believed in His name [identified themselves with His party] after seeing His signs (wonders, miracles) which He was doing. [24] But Jesus [for His part] did not trust Himself to them, because He knew all people; [25] And He did not need anyone to bear witness concerning humans [needed no evidence from anyone about them], for He Himself knew what was in human nature. [He could read people's hearts.]

I guess we've all watched a Superman movie, where his x-ray vision can see through walls, haven't we?

Well, Jesus isn't a superman, He is the perfect God-man and His x-ray vision permeates far deeper than any fictional character - He sees each heart - exactly as it is.

He can detect insincerity and hypocrisy in a heartbeat.

Here, in this passage, we see that He was very careful about who to trust.

Why? Because He knew some were only following Him for the miracles and sensationalism - they weren't really bothered about His message of the Kingdom of God and the need for salvation.

It's not a nice thing to take on board, but each of us has to come to the realisation of how intrinsically wicked and evil we are in our fallen state.

Jeremiah 17:9 AMPC

The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly perverse and corrupt and severely, mortally sick! Who can know it [perceive, understand, be acquainted with his own heart and mind]?

Peter realised it:

Luke 5:8 AMPC

But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

When I listen and examine myself in the light of God's Word, I know that even my good bits are warped and polluted by self centredness.

I'm lost, really lost without the mercy and grace of Jesus.

How wonderful that, through the Cross, Jesus now has altered my sin-sick heart and given me a new one, with His law of love engraved thereon ( although, sadly, I'm so apt to revert to my old nature).

Before Jesus can trust us, we have to each trust Him first - to wash and cleanse us and make us new.

What does Jesus see right now when He looks at your heart?
